Weekly Wrap-up ~ The Cub Scout Way

In our regular life this week…

The first part of our regular life was combined with our schooling life this week with Cub Scout Day Camp going on every day. The kids and I had to rise at O'Dark:Thirty each morning to get Brynne where she is staying for the day, to pick up the boys riding in our car to camp, and to drive to camp. Monday night we were home for 15 minutes before we were back in the car for another car trip in the opposite direction to Brynne's softball game. Then Wednesday night/Thursday morning, Brynne was throwing up. (Dawson really appreciated it since she was sleeping with him!) And our central air conditioning unit caputed. We knew that was coming. Turns out it might not be as tragic as we first thought, but we are going to have some warm days around here until this week when we can (hopefully) get it repaired.

We celebrated Rick's birthday on Friday. He took off on Friday so he could come home a day early and he came up to Family Day at camp, we went to Brynne's softball game that evening, and then to Dairy Queen after.

Rick and I, and his sister and brother-in-law, are all going to see DAUGHTRY on June 30th, and we ordered our tickets on Friday! Chris Daughtry is in my Top 5 of favorite men in the world. The others? My husband, of course, Vin Diesel (who we saw in Fast and Furious 6 last night), the mummy from the movie The Mummy, and Tim Gunn. I have an eclectic selection of men, I know.

In our homeschool this week…

It's been all about Cub Scouts. I spent the week at camp with Eli, and Rick came on Friday for Family Day.

You can read all about the fun we had all week in my previous post. There was lots of learning going on as well. The boys learned woodworking, STEM and cooking. They dissected owl pellets, did archery and range shooting with bb guns, and so much more. You can bet I am counting each of these days as 1/2 days of school. While we were at Scout camp, Brynne spent her week reading a book and playing a computer game we are reviewing so that she gets her 1/2 day credits as well.

Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…

I saw more 8, 9 and 10 year old boys this week than I care to see in my lifetime. Wow! But, we had a good time! (Still recovering, but a good time.)

Rick and I had a great time last night as we celebrated our 12 year wedding anniversary, which is today!

We went to the movies, out to dinner, to Lowe's to buy all of our landscaping items, and then to Walmart. Kyndal and Collin were on a date, also, and ended up at the same restaurant as us, sitting at the next table. Then they found us in Walmart. I guess it was a double-date of sorts. We had lots of laughs and a really great time!

Today we spent the whole day in our front hard all day planting all of our bushes and flowers. The transformation is amazing! I felt bad having Rick work all day on Father's Day, but we don't get to spend a lot of time together and things just have to be done when we can do it. We did get to spend the whole day together doing something we enjoy, so it was all good!

The Before. Tomorrow ... the After.

A favorite thing this week was…

Watching Eli rock the shooting ranges with his bow and bb gun. He hasn't ever shot before and he did AWESOME! Also, being around that many boys, I was so proud of how well behaved he is! He listens, follows instructions, and was such a breath of fresh air this week!

What's in the kitchen this week ...

Whatever we could throw together when we got home. Our house was warm because of the broken air conditioner, so we ate light and cool. Our microwave was used quite a bit. This next week I am going to work hard to get us back on our good diet utilizing some of the new tips I have learned from Trim Healthy Mama. Kyndal and I went to the Amish store yesterday to get our golden flax seed, almond flour, and coconut oil. Gotta load up on some produce.

Tonight we had one of Rick's favorite meals: Burritos!

What we're reading ...

Mom:  The Light Between Oceans by M.L. Stedman, Becoming a Titus 2 Woman by Martha Peace, Created to be His Helpmeet by Debi Pearl, Trim Healthy Mama by Serene Allison and Pearl Barrett.

Eli: Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Roderick Rules by Jeff Kinney.

Brynne: Life with Lily by Mary Ann Kinsinger and Suzanne Woods Fisher.

Read-aloud: None this week.

Things we're working on…

I am working on VBS and have so much to do! I have got to concentrate on it ALL THIS WEEK for our one-day VBS on Saturday.

I’m grateful for ...

My marriage. Rick is a great husband and a wonderful father. He provides for us, supports us, and makes us laugh ... a lot! I love you, babe!

In the garden…

I am not happy with my jalapeño plants. Usually by now I have tons of them! I think I am going to buy another 4-pack from Lowe's (where I have always had good luck) and see if I can get some production!

Things are progressing, but we need more sunshine and warmth! I think we are going to get some of that this week!

Check back tomorrow to see the progress in our flower gardens!

What's coming up this week ...

VBS, VBS, VBS. I will be very busy getting ready for that. We are going to get back into our regular morning schoolwork, and then, hopefully, hit the pool a couple of days. I need to run and get groceries tomorrow afternoon, and Brynne has a softball game in the evening. We are picking up our incubator for our chick hatching unit on Wednesday and then going on to a fun pool in a nearby town with Kyndal.

A photo, video, link, or quote to share (silly, serious or both!)…

We all know that in this crazy world of homeschooling, we need all the (adult) support we can get. Please leave a comment if you so wish!

ABCya

Eli's reading resource teacher shared a website with me yesterday that I would like to pass along. It's called ABCya . There are separate educational sections with fantastic games for ages kindergarten through 5th grade. I browsed the 2nd grade level, and it includes age-appropriate games about Letters, Numbers, Shapes, Geometry, Patterns, Mouse Manipulation, Art and Holiday games. There are lots and lots of fun and creative games for children to play. They are fun, but oh, so educational. Eli's favorite, in his short time playing it, was Create a Car . A lot of the games also have Apps available for purchase (99 cents for most of them) for the iPad and iPhone. I have been looking for another free website for games similar to Starfall , for some time. I think I have found it. I can feel confident having Eli and Brynne play these games.

Cells ~ It's What's for Dinner

Dawson made edible cells on Friday. He made an animal cell pizza ... and a plant cell chocolate chip cookie ... He reviewed what he's learned about cells the past two weeks, and I had dinner made by someone else. Win, win!! I am linking up at Science Sunday at Adventures in Mommydom.

Last Child in the Woods ~ Chapters 1-4

Welcome to our book study of Last Child in the Woods by Richard Louv. To be honest, I have no idea what this "study" is going to look like. I imagine that when we get together I will post about all of the things that caught my eye. And I would ask that you leave a comment, or a link to your own blog post in the comment, about what caught yours. This isn't anything formal, ladies, just a place to talk about what we have read. I have now read the first four chapters of Last Child in the Woods two times. It is just so good. Several things have specifically hit me deep, but in general I just realized that "times, they are a changin'." Things aren't the way they were when we were kids. Chapter 1. Gifts of Nature ~ "When I see birches bend to left and right ... I like to think some boy's been swinging them." ~ Robert Frost What is your definition of nature? What feelings, visions, senses does it conjure up? For me, it's not a
