Marshall Publishing ~ Schoolhouse Review

PENGUINS! When I saw that we could have the opportunity to review Lots and Lots of Playful Penguins by Marshall Publishing, I leaped at the chance!! When Eli and Brynne were little, they loved Lots and Lots of Jets and Planes, and we checked them out from the library more than once. I was pretty sure the Penguin videos would be a huge hit, because my kids are obssessed with penguins. In fact, just the week before, Eli chose to write a story pretending that he was a penguin.

Marshall Publishing and Promotions, Inc., not only produces the Lots and Lots of ... series of dvds, but history dvds and many other products, including As Seen on TV products.

We were given the opportunity to choose between four dvds:

I had a hard time choosing which video we should choose, because every single one of them excited me! But, ultimately, because of the kids' interest level and their ages, we chose to review the Lots and Lots of Penguins and their Happy Feet dvd set that included Lots and Lots of Playful Penguins and their Toe Tappin' Happy Feet and Lots and Lots of Penguins in the Wild.

Everybody loves animals especially, Penguins and their toe-tapping happy feet! These entertainment and educational DVDs will bring hours and hours of video fun for everyone! There's fun sing along songs by children's musician and songwriter, James Coffey along with some of the most incredible video footage of penguins ever captured on camera. All 17 species of Penguins can be found on these DVDs and they are perfect for homeschool teaching too! (from the Marshall Publishing website)

Immediately upon receipt of the videos I knew that I wanted to make a full unit study about penguins using the videos as the spine.

Each morning we started our day with a viewing of the videos. We started with Lots and Lots of Penguins in the Wild because it showcased all 17 species of penguins. This dvd was excellent! In fact, when asked what they thought of it, Eli said, "It was very fantastic!" They really enjoyed watching it! Not only was it entertaining, but it was educational, as well! I was very pleased with it!

After we completed the first video, we spent a couple of mornings viewing Lots and Lots of Playful Penguins and their Toe Tappin' Happy Feet. Although it was cute, it did not hold their attention nearly as well. In fact, several times I had to ask if they were watching it.

I mentioned that I wanted to use the dvds as the spine of a unit study. If you would like to do the same, SeaWorld/Busch Gardens has available an excellent unit study for penguins (in two separate age categories). The lesson plan went along perfectly with the Marshall Publishing dvd series to make a perfectly well-rounded unit.

The two-dvd set is regularly priced at $39.90, but can be purchased now for $19.95. You will additionally receive a bonus animated movie dvd entitled Party like a Penguin! They can be purchased by going to the Marshall Publishing site. You can also get FREE SHIPPING by entering the code TOS27.

What am I going to do with the videos now that our fun and informative penguins unit study is complete? I'm going to give the videos to my sister. My 9-week old niece is fascinated with movement and loves to watch images on the t.v. Babies are attracted to black and white images. I think she will love these videos. The penguins are adorable and so fun to watch!

The Crew Members of Schoolhouse Review have reviews written for all four dvds. You can read what others thought of the videos by going to this Schoolhouse Review link.

  1. What a great review Nicole. I couldn't decide which video we wanted either, they all looked so interesting! Kenzie would have loved this DVD because she just finished a report on Chin Strap Penguins and fell in love with them. How's your family? You are all missed at co-op!

ABCya

Eli's reading resource teacher shared a website with me yesterday that I would like to pass along. It's called ABCya . There are separate educational sections with fantastic games for ages kindergarten through 5th grade. I browsed the 2nd grade level, and it includes age-appropriate games about Letters, Numbers, Shapes, Geometry, Patterns, Mouse Manipulation, Art and Holiday games. There are lots and lots of fun and creative games for children to play. They are fun, but oh, so educational. Eli's favorite, in his short time playing it, was Create a Car . A lot of the games also have Apps available for purchase (99 cents for most of them) for the iPad and iPhone. I have been looking for another free website for games similar to Starfall , for some time. I think I have found it. I can feel confident having Eli and Brynne play these games.

A Thomas Jefferson Education "This Week in History" ~ Schoolhouse Review

Talk about a GOLD MINE! A Thomas Jefferson Education's This Week in History by Rachel DeMille is her "labor of love" ... and I absolutely LOVE it! " This Week in History is a daily resource that brings your home school or classroom to life." For just $9.99 per month, you can log onto TJEd.com and click the "This Week in History" link to obtain many, many, many resources tied to specific events that occurred in the upcoming week in history. Or even better, you can receive the summaries and links to ALL resources right in your email Inbox each week! It doesn't get any easier than that! What does this really look like in real life? Each week, I receive an email from Rachel DeMille that sets out each date of the coming week. Under the date, there are listed anywhere from one to several events that occurred in history on that date. THEN there are ALL kinds of things to do related to that event, such as books to read, websites to visit, ac
