Crossbow Education ~ Crew Review

Probably you know this already, but perhaps you don't ... our Eli, age 8 1/2, is on the autism spectrum. Although we have never had him officially diagnosed (why, really?), he has all of the characteristics of Asperger's Syndrome. I would imagine it's a mild case, but it's there, alright.

One area of stress for Eli has been reading. Give him a math problem, and he's done in a flash! Give him a book with more than one line on it and he can't hardly begin to read for being stressed about the number of words on the page. (He is actually much better about this than he used to be, but that is always the first thing he says about a book when he opens it to read it.)

Enter the Eye Level Reading Ruler by Crossbow Education. What a marvelous tool! How I wish we would have had this tool when Eli was first starting to read!

How does it work? It looks like a ruler with two separate guide lines: one for reading one sentence at a time and one for reading a paragraph. You simply put the line under the sentence you are reading (which is in a shaded area) and move it down as you read. It helps with focus, helps to keep your place where you are reading, and (if using the sentence guide line) helps to block the other sentences so they aren't a distraction.

We received a package of 10 rulers, in 10 different shades. The idea is to use each one to see which color helps you to focus the best. Both of my kids (ages 7 and 8 1/2) used it, and both chose blue.

What did we think of it? We think it's fantastic! We keep it in our library basket and when Eli grabs a book, he grabs the ruler. Honestly, I haven't heard him complain about reading in quite some time. Coincidence?

The Eye Level Reading Ruler is designed for persons with dyslexia and visual stress, but anyone can use it and benefit from it. And the price is right, too. For the package of 10 different tinted rulers, you only pay $16.95. Go to Crossbow Education's website to place your order.

I would highly recommend this product for anyone who has any stress while reading, and especially for all children just learning to read.

  1. We love this product! I keep the rules in our library bag too...and in science and history books. They work great for highlighting information for notebook pages too! :)

ABCya

Eli's reading resource teacher shared a website with me yesterday that I would like to pass along. It's called ABCya . There are separate educational sections with fantastic games for ages kindergarten through 5th grade. I browsed the 2nd grade level, and it includes age-appropriate games about Letters, Numbers, Shapes, Geometry, Patterns, Mouse Manipulation, Art and Holiday games. There are lots and lots of fun and creative games for children to play. They are fun, but oh, so educational. Eli's favorite, in his short time playing it, was Create a Car . A lot of the games also have Apps available for purchase (99 cents for most of them) for the iPad and iPhone. I have been looking for another free website for games similar to Starfall , for some time. I think I have found it. I can feel confident having Eli and Brynne play these games.

A Thomas Jefferson Education "This Week in History" ~ Schoolhouse Review

Talk about a GOLD MINE! A Thomas Jefferson Education's This Week in History by Rachel DeMille is her "labor of love" ... and I absolutely LOVE it! " This Week in History is a daily resource that brings your home school or classroom to life." For just $9.99 per month, you can log onto TJEd.com and click the "This Week in History" link to obtain many, many, many resources tied to specific events that occurred in the upcoming week in history. Or even better, you can receive the summaries and links to ALL resources right in your email Inbox each week! It doesn't get any easier than that! What does this really look like in real life? Each week, I receive an email from Rachel DeMille that sets out each date of the coming week. Under the date, there are listed anywhere from one to several events that occurred in history on that date. THEN there are ALL kinds of things to do related to that event, such as books to read, websites to visit, ac
