Homeschool mamas, well any mamas for that matter, tend to push their husbands to the back burner. Let me rephrase that: This homeschool mama tends to push her husband to the back burner. Although in my heart he is my priority just under God, in reality he gets the last little pieces of me, if any. I know I am not alone in this.
We have a particularly difficult situation in that Rick and I are living in two different states, and we will likely be continuing to do so for quite some time. The kids and I are settled here in Missouri, but circumstances dictate that Rick continue to live in Oklahoma until some obligations can be fulfilled. And he has a really great job that he just can't give up at this time. He travels here most weekends to see us, but it's a whirlwind trip where he is trying to cram in as much time with the kids as possible, do honey do's and spend a few moments alone with me. I'm a big girl so I feel like his time should be spent with the kids because they don't understand this whole situation and they miss him so badly. But I can see where he takes that as me not caring if I spend time with him. That's not true, at all. I'm just a mama who thinks about her kids' feelings before her own. But, I can see how he would feel that way.
Anyway, I want to find a way to let Rick now that I am THINKING about him and PLANNING our time together. I want him to feel special, that he takes a specific place in my life. He does, but I want him to feel it!
Enter "Dating Through the Alphabet".
This is something I have been wanting to do for a long time. It just sounds fun! The idea is simple. You plan dates with your spouse, starting with the letter A and going through the alphabet, doing things on that date that start with the letter you are on.
SPOILER ALERT, RICK! If you don't want to know what we are doing, STOP READING THIS POST NOW!
I will be starting our Dating Through the Alphabet dates this Friday. Since we are starting with "A", this is what I have planned .... We are going to go to our local university to watch "A Second of Pleasure" and two other one-Act plays. After they are over we are going to go to Applebee's for half-price Appetizers and A cocktail (or two). Admission to the play is $1 per person at the door and the appetizers are, well, half-price. So, it will be an inexpensive date also. Here's the kicker! I am not a night owl. Usually when Rick and I go out we go out to eat with the "blue hairs" and are home ready for bed by about 8:00 p.m. This date will require me to stay up late! The plays don't even start until 7:30 p.m.!! Half-price appetizers at Applebee's don't start until 10:00 p.m.! That, in and of itself, will impress my husband.
SO, do you want to join me?
If you do, here are the rules:
- Grab this cute button that my friend Shannon made me. (I am completely illiterate at making buttons, so Shannon always helps me out.)
- Write a blog post sharing your Alphabet Date. Obviously you don't have to be on the letter I am on. Just start with A and keep going. Some of us might go on dates once a week, some of us once a month. Our schedule will depend on our schedule. But, I will have the Linky up each Sunday.
- Link YOUR SPECIFIC BLOG POST back to the Linky post.
- And most importantly, ENJOY YOUR HUSBAND!
I do hope that you will join me. I would love to steal hear your dating ideas. See you on Sunday!
I am linking up to Blogging Through the Alphabet with Ben and Me.

When we lived in Missiouri, my husband ended up spending about 8 weeks in Kanasa. It was a LONG drive so he did NOT come home every weekend. It was hard and the girls were so little. Now the girls are nearly grown. Dates are easier to schedule but NO money. So I think I'm going to see if I can some up some inexpensive, cheap, frugal dates based on the alphabet. Now to think of something for the letter A. :D
ReplyDeleteNot sure I'll have time to link up and really participate, but I'll be stalking this post like a mad-woman for ideas. :) With our boys being older now, we try to go out at least once a week. It's easier in this phase of life, but I still have to put it on my calendar for it to happen.
ReplyDeleteVery cute idea!!! Maybe I have been inspired to get back to my neglected blog! Of course most of my "dates" will have to be long distance, so they will look a little different than most. But it will help me get back into the "keeping love alive when separated by many miles" mindset! :)
