A Peek at Our Weekend ~ The One Where I Wonder How Things Got So Busy! (actually, I know why)

What was in the kitchen ...

On Saturday night we celebrated Dawson's 17th birthday with his friends and family and a taco bar. For dessert we had Angel Food Cake, at Dawson's request.



An activity we did away from home ...

Brynne's volleyball team played in a tournament on Friday night. They placed 2nd and did so well! There are only six girls on their team, so they played every second of every game. They have grown and improved so much this season. It's been really fun to watch!

On Saturday morning, Eli and Brynne started their new bowling league. This is the same league I bowled in when I was a little girl. I forgot how much fun small town sports were. I am loving it.

Then on Saturday evening Brynne went to a costume birthday party for a friend. She wanted to be a dog, so I made her costume for her. I can do just about anything with sweatsuits, hot glue and felt.



What we learned at church ...

In Children's Church, we are practicing a skit of The Parable of the Talents to perform during service in three weeks. I have taken over Children's Church for the 4th-6th graders and we are having a great time!


Things accomplished at home ...

Rick pulled out our air conditioners and we got our electric heaters out and ready for winter. That's how seasons change in Missouri. We typically go straight from hot to cold overnight.


My favorite moment ...

was having a FULL house all weekend! All of the people I love most were in this house at some point or another. Dawson's two best friends from Oklahoma were here all weekend visiting for his birthday. They brought their Xboxs and we set up t.v.s for each of them in Dawson's room and they hibernated all weekend. They basically slept where they dropped, even an extra friend from here slept on the landing of the stairs going up to Dawson's room.


Collin was here for the weekend because he had gotten his wisdom teeth extracted on Friday, so we were taking care of him (when he wasn't hunting ... yes, he went hunting with his dad the day after having his teeth removed).

My parents came over for dinner on Friday night.

And, of course, Rick was home for the weekend.

We just had a really great weekend as a (large) family.


Ways we relaxed ...

Let's just say that it's a great time to be a Missouri sports fan! Our Missouri Tigers are ranked 5th in the polls; the Kansas City Chiefs are 7-0; and the St. Louis Cardinals are going to the World Series. It has been so nice to be back to following Missouri sports, and actually being able to watch them on t.v. Nothing better than a Saturday or Sunday afternoon, cuddled up on the couch, watching football.


Preparations for the week ahead ...

I worked on my curriculum all afternoon and evening on Sunday. I am trying to get it done by the end of next week so that I can enjoy Halloween with the kids without the stress of it hanging over my head.

We found our groove with math this year. I found a curriculum that both of the kids respond well to and seem to enjoy (as much as one can enjoy math). We have spent the whole year learning the ins and outs of multiplication and were just a few lessons away from being ready to move onto the next year-long level on division. And then an opportunity to review the 12 Month Family Plan from  CTC Math became available. To be honest, I wasn't very enthusiastic. I mean, why mess with the methods that have worked so well? When I was chosen to review the product I didn't go into it with the level of enthusiasm that it deserved. We have been using a dvd/workbook curriculum with great success. The 12 Month Family Plan from CTC Math is a web based curriculum. As we have not had a lot of luck with those types of programs, I went into this review with a negative attitude. Veritas Press Self-Paced History: Old Testament and Ancient Egypt (Schoolhouse Review)

For the past several weeks we have been reviewing Veritas Press Self-Paced History: Old Testament and Ancient Egypt and the Old Testament and Ancient Egypt Flashcards  from Veritas Press . As we were entering into our more easy-going summer schedule, and had just concluded a two-year Old Testament Bible course, I was happy to try out this product as it appeared to be something that Eli and Brynne could do together, alone, and would act as a review of the Old Testament presented in a different way. And I was right. Each Veritas Press Self-Paced History program includes 160 lessons teaching about 32 events in history. They are designed for children in grades 2-6, and it is recommended that the student be a minimum of 7 years of age at the time of the first lesson. Cells ~ It's What's for Dinner

Dawson made edible cells on Friday. He made an animal cell pizza ... and a plant cell chocolate chip cookie ... He reviewed what he's learned about cells the past two weeks, and I had dinner made by someone else. Win, win!! I am linking up at Science Sunday at Adventures in Mommydom.
