Weekly Wrap-up ~ A Break

In our regular life this week…

On Wednesday night, Kyndal's lung broke. Well, excess air was surrounding her lung and built up between her chest wall and lung which caused 40% of her lung to collapse. As there was no apparent reason why this happened, it was called a Spontaneous Pneumothorax. She was admitted into the hospital last night where they inserted a catheter between her ribs, removed the excess air, and gave her oxygen to get her lung to re-inflate. We spent the night in the hospital for observation and she received an all-clear after her x-ray this morning.

In our homeschool this week…

This week we were wrapping things up in anticipation of our Thanksgiving week OFF! It's BREAK TIME! (Again, the benefits of doing summer school!) We mostly stuck to the basics.

Spelling - We did our first week of homophones in both Spelling and Grammar.

Reading - We didn't get any reading aloud done this week. But the kids continued to read their books.

Writing - Or writing.

Math - We completed Lesson 16 in Math U See.

Handwriting - The kids completed five more lessons in Handwriting Without Tears Cursive Success

Geography - We watched an episode of Liberty's Kids every day. We are on Episode 30 of 40. Almost done!

Extra - This was the last week of the kids' Castles and Cannons Minecraft class. So, they spent the majority of their time finishing up their work, building with their new friends. Brynne is very sad that the class is almost over and that many of her friends are not joining the Holiday class. She will lose access to multiplay with them.

Homeschool Tricks and Tips ...

Spend your last week before a break just wrapping things up so that you can start fresh and new after your break, and so you won't feel behind before you even get started.

Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…

Eli and Brynne are seeing Grandma today while I am at the hospital with Kyndal. Although the circumstances are stinky, they are excited to see Grandma since she has been in Florida for 5 weeks! The only people I have seen this week are doctors and nurses. Brynne is still deep into basketball practice and both her and Eli are enjoying bowling!

A favorite thing this week was…

Snagging the Disney Infinity game for the Xbox 360, for Eli's birthday, for $37 at Walmart's Pre-Black Friday price matching sale. That was the only benefit of Kyndal being in the hospital … I was in the same town as a Walmart when the sale started! It was a savings of $40, which is much-needed with Kyndal's upcoming medical bills.

What's in the kitchen this week ...

I made some soothing homemade vegetable soup and some pumpkin bread.

What we're reading ...

Mom:  I, Saul by Jerry B. Jenkins. It's a good one, so far.

Eli: Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days by Jeff Kinney.

Brynne: Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Last Straw by Jeff Kinney.

Read-aloud: A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens.

Things we're working on…

Enjoying a nice Thanksgiving break! We need a break and are really looking forward to this one. I am also one group assignment away from completing my class, and I am relieved it is almost over! Now it's turkey time!

I’m grateful for …

Kyndal's quick recovery and that we get to leave the hospital today.

What's coming up this week ...

Thanksgiving! And, we may be switching our bedroom with Eli's bedroom now that Brynne has moved downstairs with Kyndal. He doesn't need the bigger bedroom anymore. This will require some painting, however, so hopefully we will be able to get it done. Then again, I may want to just sit and do absolutely nothing for a full week!

A photo, video, link, or quote to share (silly, serious or both!)…

  1. Wow, I had no idea. So glad Kyndal is home and feeling better.

We all know that in this crazy world of homeschooling, we need all the (adult) support we can get. Please leave a comment if you so wish!

ABCya

Eli's reading resource teacher shared a website with me yesterday that I would like to pass along. It's called ABCya . There are separate educational sections with fantastic games for ages kindergarten through 5th grade. I browsed the 2nd grade level, and it includes age-appropriate games about Letters, Numbers, Shapes, Geometry, Patterns, Mouse Manipulation, Art and Holiday games. There are lots and lots of fun and creative games for children to play. They are fun, but oh, so educational. Eli's favorite, in his short time playing it, was Create a Car . A lot of the games also have Apps available for purchase (99 cents for most of them) for the iPad and iPhone. I have been looking for another free website for games similar to Starfall , for some time. I think I have found it. I can feel confident having Eli and Brynne play these games.

A Thomas Jefferson Education "This Week in History" ~ Schoolhouse Review

Talk about a GOLD MINE! A Thomas Jefferson Education's This Week in History by Rachel DeMille is her "labor of love" ... and I absolutely LOVE it! " This Week in History is a daily resource that brings your home school or classroom to life." For just $9.99 per month, you can log onto TJEd.com and click the "This Week in History" link to obtain many, many, many resources tied to specific events that occurred in the upcoming week in history. Or even better, you can receive the summaries and links to ALL resources right in your email Inbox each week! It doesn't get any easier than that! What does this really look like in real life? Each week, I receive an email from Rachel DeMille that sets out each date of the coming week. Under the date, there are listed anywhere from one to several events that occurred in history on that date. THEN there are ALL kinds of things to do related to that event, such as books to read, websites to visit, ac

Cells ~ It's What's for Dinner

Dawson made edible cells on Friday. He made an animal cell pizza ... and a plant cell chocolate chip cookie ... He reviewed what he's learned about cells the past two weeks, and I had dinner made by someone else. Win, win!! I am linking up at Science Sunday at Adventures in Mommydom.
