Five Days of …. Missouri - Kansas City {Schoolhouse Review Crew Blog Hop}

Welcome to Day 2 of the Five Days of …. Blog Hop sponsored by the Schoolhouse Review Crew. I am giving you five days of Missouri. Today we are talking about Kansas City.

We live much closer to Kansas City than St. Louis. I guess that's why we haven't really vacationed there. I have never looked at it from a tourist's perspective. So that's exactly what I have done. I pretended that I had never been to Kansas City before and were researching a trip there.

If I were going to visit Kansas City, I would do it around Christmastime. There are so many fun things to do and see in Kansas City around Christmas.


Where to Stay

The Country Club Plaza is a magical place with all of its Christmas lights. There are many hotels with views of the Christmas lights, and it's lovely.


The shopping and restaurants at The Plaza are second-to-none, and you can walk to get wherever you want. It is a perfect central spot while you visit the city.


What to Do

Next to The Plaza is the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art.


Just a couple of miles away is Union Station and Crown Center. Union Station houses Science City and is a lot of fun! This science museum is quite a bit different than many we have visited. Historic Union Station is absolutely beautiful and fun to see.



Crown Center has an outside skating rink that is very popular during the winter. Once you have skated for a time and need to warm up, you can visit the SEA LIFE Aquarium or Legoland Discovery Center.


If you happen to be there at the right time, you can catch a children's production at Coterie Theatre. We have seen Bud, Not Buddy. And this summer are going to see Schoolhouse Rock and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The mall is decked out for Christmas and so fun to see!




The National World War I Museum at Liberty Memorial would be such an awesome place to visit, especially if you had been learning about the war. We will definitely plan on taking a trip there in the future.


How about learning about money? The Money Museum at Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City allows you to do just that! There are even pre-visit and post-visit lesson plans for 5-8 grade and 9-12 grade. If we can take a vacation and log some school hours …. bonus!!!


Some other fun things to do in Kansas City, that cost quite a bit more money, would be Worlds of Fun and Oceans of Fun, Schlitterbahn Water Park, Great Wolf Lodge and the Kansas City Zoo.


Where to Eat

Our favorite place to eat in Kansas City is Fritz's Railroad Restaurant. The food is mediocre (greasy burgers and fries). But, the ambiance for kids is fantastic! You order your food by speaking into a crackly phone at your table. The kids get conductor hats to wear, and your food is delivered by an electronic train on a mini-railway system. The cost is very reasonable and we eat there everytime we go to the Crown Center area.


And of course you have to eat authentic Kansas City Barbecue. I cannot recommend any because I am not a huge fan of BBQ and I have never eaten any there. What?? I grew up near Kansas City and even went to law school there but have never eaten its most famous food. Tell me how you like it!

    Have you ever been to the Arabia Steamboat Museum in KC? I'm wondering if it's engaging enough for kids.

    We've been to KC a couple of times, but we've never been at Christmas!! It sounds BEAUTIFUL! We never got into a lot of it, though, it sounds like we missed so much!

We found our groove with math this year. I found a curriculum that both of the kids respond well to and seem to enjoy (as much as one can enjoy math). We have spent the whole year learning the ins and outs of multiplication and were just a few lessons away from being ready to move onto the next year-long level on division. And then an opportunity to review the 12 Month Family Plan from  CTC Math became available. To be honest, I wasn't very enthusiastic. I mean, why mess with the methods that have worked so well? When I was chosen to review the product I didn't go into it with the level of enthusiasm that it deserved. We have been using a dvd/workbook curriculum with great success. The 12 Month Family Plan from CTC Math is a web based curriculum. As we have not had a lot of luck with those types of programs, I went into this review with a negative attitude. Veritas Press Self-Paced History: Old Testament and Ancient Egypt (Schoolhouse Review)

For the past several weeks we have been reviewing Veritas Press Self-Paced History: Old Testament and Ancient Egypt and the Old Testament and Ancient Egypt Flashcards  from Veritas Press . As we were entering into our more easy-going summer schedule, and had just concluded a two-year Old Testament Bible course, I was happy to try out this product as it appeared to be something that Eli and Brynne could do together, alone, and would act as a review of the Old Testament presented in a different way. And I was right. Each Veritas Press Self-Paced History program includes 160 lessons teaching about 32 events in history. Cells ~ It's What's for Dinner

Dawson made edible cells on Friday. He made an animal cell pizza ... and a plant cell chocolate chip cookie ... He reviewed what he's learned about cells the past two weeks, and I had dinner made by someone else. Win, win!! I am linking up at Science Sunday at Adventures in Mommydom.
