Weekly Wrap-Up ~ A Week of Racing

This wasn't a typical week for us. We left on Saturday for the 4-hour trip to my parents' in Missouri. A lot was going on. My parents' have sold their large house in the country of the past 14 years and purchased a smaller one in town. So my mom and I spent the majority of our visit doing landscaping, getting curtains hung, shopping for items needed for the new house, and making trips back and forth between the two houses moving things.

On top of that, my grandma was placed in a nursing home on Friday, so we made several trips to see her, and went through her house taking care of any heirlooms.

Add to that haircuts by my sister, swimming, and 4th of July activities, and we had a busy five days! It felt like we were in a non-stop race to get everything done.

Brynne participated in some races at the annual 4th of July celebration at my childhood hometown park. She did the egg race and sack race. The other kids opted out of the park festivities this year, so she and I went alone.

We got home on Wednesday night and spent yesterday getting caught up on laundry and vegging with the dogs. We also went over to some friends' in the evening to eat watermelon.

Then today, Eli, Brynne and I went to see Cars 2.

It was good. I enjoyed it. But it didn't pale in comparison to the first one, in my opinion. I then treated the kids to a Cars 2 Tokyo Race Track and a couple of cars they didn't have, and they have been racing them all afternoon. I wanted to reward them for being really well-behaved kids! Spending a couple of hours at a movie theater with other kids, and then seeing how the majority of kids act while out shopping with their parents, I just had to show my kids that I appreciate them!

I would like to say that things will be slowing down now. However, when I look at the calendar and see that school will start in a little over a month, I realize that it will actually be a race to get everything ready to start back up in time.

Whew! With temps over 100 degrees every day, I'd really like to just slow us down. No time for that, though. Summer races on!

  1. Summer IS racing by, isn't it? I was just looking at our schedule for July and August and saw that we only have 2 weeks totally off from activities! (Fortunately 1 of those weeks is before we start up again.) I still haven't purchased all our books/workbooks yet!

  2. I had such plans for getting organized this summer, choosing some new curriculum, de-cluttering, etc. but I feel like the summer is slipping away. Racing by is a good way to describe it! Glad that you were able to spend some time with family and enjoy a movie with the kids.

We all know that in this crazy world of homeschooling, we need all the (adult) support we can get. Please leave a comment if you so wish!

Cells ~ It's What's for Dinner

Dawson made edible cells on Friday. He made an animal cell pizza ... and a plant cell chocolate chip cookie ... He reviewed what he's learned about cells the past two weeks, and I had dinner made by someone else. Win, win!! I am linking up at Science Sunday at Adventures in Mommydom.

A New Year, the Same Me

Happy 2019! It is that day of the year where everybody is up extra early starting their new exercise routine, eating only healthy foods, cracking open the pages of a new planner and Bible study, and debuting their Word for the year. You chuckle or roll your eyes, but you are doing at least three of these things. By the way, so am I. So let's start with the Word of the Year. Mine this year is Lagom. It's the Swedish word for "not too little, not too much, just right". It's a concept of being, doing or having just enough. So let's rewind to last New Year's Day. My Word was Might. And that's how I planned to tackle my year. And, I did. I worked out hard, I mommed hard, I traveled hard, I worked hard. And it was a good season. It prepared the way for this year. I accepted the Challenge I set for myself and succeeded. But, I don't need to keep up that pace. I am at a place in my life where I can kind of sit back and enjoy my life without f...

Science Sunday ~ Hmmm ... Let Me Think About It!

This week in our study of the Human Body , Brynne moved on to the Nervous System . Our first stop was a Pamela Hill Nettleton book called, Think, Think, Think: Learning About Your Brain . As part of our discussions about the brain , and the fact that it's the BOSS of the body, we discussed the importance of the spinal cord . We did a hands on spinal cord project by alternating gummy Life Savers and wagon wheel pasta on a pipe cleaner. We talked about why there was the "squishy" stuff in between the vertebra and how the back can bend and sway because of it. We completed "The Brynne" by adding the stomach, small intestine and large intestine, from our study last week of the Digestive System (although I just realized I have the large intestine coming out of the stomach, when the small intestine should be) and the brain and spinal cord. We are now done talking about the parts of the body and will conclude our study of the Human Body with a two-day unit ...
