American History ~ Living Book List (so far)

I have been taking a crash course in U.S. History this summer. And I have loved it! It makes me realize how dry and boring my school history classes were when I was a kid and teenager and how I learned nothing! I don't know if Dawson and Brynne will learn anything, but we are going to have fun trying! I have learned more this summer than I ever thought possible, and the history of our country is an exciting thing!

One of the things I am most excited about with this course is the Living Books we will be reading. I like to do these as Read-a-Louds so I can enjoy them, too. Here is what we will be reading (I have three more units to plan, so I will add to the list):

Blood on the River by Elisa Lynn Carbona
Yankee Doodle Boy by Joseph Plumb Martin
The Captain's Dog by Roland Smith
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain
Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe
The Slopes of War by Norah A. Perez
O Pioneers by Willa Cather
Black Elk Speaks by John G. Neihardt
The Gangs of New York by Herbert Asbury
Color Me Dark by Patricia C. McKissack
The Angry Dust by William Davey

I have taken a lot of time choosing the books for us to read. I think that this list will cater to Dawson's interests from these eras. Brynne is typically doing something else while we read these books. The topics we read aloud are too old for her, most times.

Our favorite time of the day is our Read-a-Loud time. I can't wait to get started on this list!

    Great book list. My oldest ds enjoyed several on your list as well as Black Like Me and The Jungle.

Eli's reading resource teacher shared a website with me yesterday that I would like to pass along. It's called ABCya . There are separate educational sections with fantastic games for ages kindergarten through 5th grade. I browsed the 2nd grade level, and it includes age-appropriate games about Letters, Numbers, Shapes, Geometry, Patterns, Mouse Manipulation, Art and Holiday games. There are lots and lots of fun and creative games for children to play. They are fun, but oh, so educational. Eli's favorite, in his short time playing it, was Create a Car . A lot of the games also have Apps available for purchase (99 cents for most of them) for the iPad and iPhone. I have been looking for another free website for games similar to Starfall , for some time. I think I have found it. I can feel confident having Eli and Brynne play these games.

Cells ~ It's What's for Dinner

Dawson made edible cells on Friday. He made an animal cell pizza ... and a plant cell chocolate chip cookie ... He reviewed what he's learned about cells the past two weeks, and I had dinner made by someone else. Win, win!! I am linking up at Science Sunday at Adventures in Mommydom.
