First Full Day ~ A Rough Start

Today we started our FULL daily schedule. The reality of homeschooling Eli and Brynne together hit early. Eli gets distracted very easily, so I had to spend a lot of time getting him focused. Brynne, on the other hand, finishes her work quickly and is ready to move on to the next lesson. Since they are doing the same work, I need for them to be working on the same subjects at the same time. That is going to be a challenge for me.

Eli also had two weeping spells before lunch, and I had to excuse him to his room to pull himself together. After he came out the second time, though, he seemed ready to work and was much happier.

A Charlotte Mason education with Eli is going to be so important, I think. And I am going to need to be sure to follow her philosophies of short lessons and living our learning in order to keep from overwhelming him. I need a refresher on this style of learning.

I'll leave this post with a photo of them happily working on their math assignments. We are currently using Addition Teaching and Learning Made Easy by Glenda Brown James. We have really enjoyed it. You can read my full review on it by going HERE.

I am hoping for a more streamlined day tomorrow.

  1. It's so strange not seeing Dawson in your homschool day : ( We started our first day back today too, Yikes is the only word I can say about that! What were you going to use for Dawson's chemistry class this year? I'm still trying to pull our curriculum together (nothing like waiting till the last minute).
Hope you and the littles have a better day tomorrow : )

  2. Nicole, do you have the dvd series from SimplyCharlotteMason.com? It's like having your own personal CM lecture and refresher course on how to apply the subjects. My sister-in-law and I get together and watch it again about once a year.

    Hope tomorrow goes more smoothly!

  3. Hang in there. It'll get better. That first day is always tricky. (I know you know this) Bradley gets distracted easily and needs those extra moments to himself. I know exactly what you are experiencing.

  4. Hang in there. I have a two girls that are just like you describe. I make sure to have stress balls, doodling books ( and have a few pages that need little info for the one like Brynne. We have been medication free for over a year and with the Asperger's it can be trying, but I wouldn't miss this time now.

  5. Awww - you both just need to adjust. It will be okay, especially if you are focused on his learning style instead of yours. How is Dawson's new high school experience going???

We all know that in this crazy world of homeschooling, we need all the (adult) support we can get. Please leave a comment if you so wish!

ABCya

Eli's reading resource teacher shared a website with me yesterday that I would like to pass along. It's called ABCya . There are separate educational sections with fantastic games for ages kindergarten through 5th grade. I browsed the 2nd grade level, and it includes age-appropriate games about Letters, Numbers, Shapes, Geometry, Patterns, Mouse Manipulation, Art and Holiday games. There are lots and lots of fun and creative games for children to play. They are fun, but oh, so educational. Eli's favorite, in his short time playing it, was Create a Car . A lot of the games also have Apps available for purchase (99 cents for most of them) for the iPad and iPhone. I have been looking for another free website for games similar to Starfall , for some time. I think I have found it. I can feel confident having Eli and Brynne play these games.

A Thomas Jefferson Education "This Week in History" ~ Schoolhouse Review

Talk about a GOLD MINE! A Thomas Jefferson Education's This Week in History by Rachel DeMille is her "labor of love" ... and I absolutely LOVE it! " This Week in History is a daily resource that brings your home school or classroom to life." For just $9.99 per month, you can log onto TJEd.com and click the "This Week in History" link to obtain many, many, many resources tied to specific events that occurred in the upcoming week in history. Or even better, you can receive the summaries and links to ALL resources right in your email Inbox each week! It doesn't get any easier than that! What does this really look like in real life? Each week, I receive an email from Rachel DeMille that sets out each date of the coming week. Under the date, there are listed anywhere from one to several events that occurred in history on that date. THEN there are ALL kinds of things to do related to that event, such as books to read, websites to visit, ac

Cells ~ It's What's for Dinner

Dawson made edible cells on Friday. He made an animal cell pizza ... and a plant cell chocolate chip cookie ... He reviewed what he's learned about cells the past two weeks, and I had dinner made by someone else. Win, win!! I am linking up at Science Sunday at Adventures in Mommydom.
