Weekly Wrap-Up ~ Curriculum 2010-2011

Being a new homeschooling mom, making connections with others is so important to me. I am pretty clueless, so reading what others are doing helps me immensely.

Kris at Weird, Unsocialized Homeschoolers hosts a weekly Wrap-Up. I plan to participate in it every week.

This week she is inviting posts about the 2010-2011 Curriculum choices. I have posted about our chosen curriculum before, but thought I would do an official post today.

For Dawson's first year of homeschooling, and my first year at teaching, we have decided to stick to his strengths in our teaching and learning style and do a unit study based on his interests.

Primary Curriculum: A World of Adventure, by Dorian Holt. It will have daily lessons that include Bible, Social Studies, Science, Literature, Writing, Grammar, Spelling, Vocabulary and Fine Arts all based on the following units ~ Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome, The Middle Ages, The Renaissance and Reformation, and The Age of Exploration. I will supplement this with other things I find in research.

You can go here to see our reading list.

Devotion: My World ~ Getting to Know Myself and the People I Love by Michael Kast, and The Rules by Mark Nicholas.

American History: We will do unit studies, that I will create, reading books and watching documentaries and doing projects. We will be starting with Pearl Harbor.

Math: Saxon Algebra 1/2, pre-algebra.

Spanish: We will actually be checking out the materials from his 6th grade Spanish teacher for the 7th grade Spanish curriculum. He liked the style and she said she would be more than willing to loan me the next level's materials and help whenever possible.

Typing: Good Typing, a free online typing course.

Additional Fun: The Curious Boy's Book of Exploration by Sam Martin.

Volunteering: One afternoon a week I volunteer at our elementary school, doing lesson plan copies for the kindergarten teachers. While I am doing that, Dawson will be volunteering for the kindergarten and 1st grade teachers, doing projects and reading to the students.

I am more than certain that we will make revisions to this as we get into it. We have a general plan, and will just have to see how it goes.

  5. Enjoy your first year! My kids are in 10th and 7th grades and have been homeschooled their whole lives and wouldn't change it! Remember that you are allowed to adjust your curriculum in mid-stream if you need to! Make it work for you and your son. Have lots of fun while you learn together.

  9. A lady that I know from our old homeschool group used a World of Adventure and they really liked it. My understanding is that it covered a lot of history. Best wishes in your first year of homeschooling!

ABCya

Eli's reading resource teacher shared a website with me yesterday that I would like to pass along. It's called ABCya . There are separate educational sections with fantastic games for ages kindergarten through 5th grade. I browsed the 2nd grade level, and it includes age-appropriate games about Letters, Numbers, Shapes, Geometry, Patterns, Mouse Manipulation, Art and Holiday games. There are lots and lots of fun and creative games for children to play. They are fun, but oh, so educational. Eli's favorite, in his short time playing it, was Create a Car . A lot of the games also have Apps available for purchase (99 cents for most of them) for the iPad and iPhone. I have been looking for another free website for games similar to Starfall , for some time. I think I have found it. I can feel confident having Eli and Brynne play these games.

Cells ~ It's What's for Dinner

Dawson made edible cells on Friday. He made an animal cell pizza ... and a plant cell chocolate chip cookie ... He reviewed what he's learned about cells the past two weeks, and I had dinner made by someone else. Win, win!! I am linking up at Science Sunday at Adventures in Mommydom.

Last Child in the Woods ~ Chapters 1-4

Welcome to our book study of Last Child in the Woods by Richard Louv. To be honest, I have no idea what this "study" is going to look like. I imagine that when we get together I will post about all of the things that caught my eye. And I would ask that you leave a comment, or a link to your own blog post in the comment, about what caught yours. This isn't anything formal, ladies, just a place to talk about what we have read. I have now read the first four chapters of Last Child in the Woods two times. It is just so good. Several things have specifically hit me deep, but in general I just realized that "times, they are a changin'." Things aren't the way they were when we were kids. Chapter 1. Gifts of Nature ~ "When I see birches bend to left and right ... I like to think some boy's been swinging them." ~ Robert Frost What is your definition of nature? What feelings, visions, senses does it conjure up? For me, it's not a
