Wednesday Hodgepodge

October 21, 2015, is Back to the Future Day. Did you see the movie? The sequels? In the second film, Doc takes Marty into the future to prevent Mary's future son from making a mistake. They leave 1985 and land on a 'skyway' on October 21st, 2015. So tell us, what were you doing in the fall of 1985?

Oh, yes, I have seen the movies and made sure my kids have seen them, too. In fact, we just might watch one of them today if we can find the time. I can remember the fall of 1985 as if it were yesterday. I was a freshman in high school. It was Homecoming time. I can remember candidate poster parties, band parades, dancing on the pompon squad at half-time of football games, and most specifically "snagging" the boyfriend I wanted. He was a senior. I remember us going to play in a parade, and I had laryngitis. He flirted with me all day. After we got home I was standing in my living room with my friend and he drove by my house. I screamed and fell to the floor. He asked me to "go with him" shortly after that, and we went to Homecoming together. Oh, young love. (We ended up dating until the summer before my senior year of high school.)

If time travel were possible, would you want to go to the future? The past?

The future? No. The past? Oh yes. There are so many time periods I would love to visit. Now that would be some awesome homeschooling!

We're not flying cars, but some of the technology imagined in the 80's film has indeed come to pass in real life 2015: flat screen TVs on the wall, tablets, fingerprint recognition, video conferencing, online banking, 3D movies, motion controlled video games, drone cameras, and smart glasses (Google glass). Do you worry technology is growing at a rate so fast we'll soon be unable to keep up with its demands? Do you think the Internet does more harm than good?

You could drop me in the middle of Ma and Pa Ingalls's homestead and I would be happy. A part of me fights technology. But then the other part makes me keep up with it somewhat so I do not end up being some gripey old woman who fights the changing of the times. I would like to be the cool great grandma who regularly communicates with her grandkids in whatever way they communicate.

Your favorite dish prepared in a slow-cooker? Your favorite fast food?

My favorite slow-cooker dish is Crockpot Dressing. It is SO good, and I am SO excited that Thanksgiving will be here soon and we will be eating it! My favorite fast food is the McRib from McDonald's. It is also SO good, and I am also SO glad that it is almost the seasonal time for them to be available.

No time like the present, down time, face time, pressed for time, in the nick of time, make time, mark time, or just in time ... which timely saying most relates to your life right now?

This time of year we definitely have to make time for family special events. It is just our craziest, busiest time of year. We have birthdays every month, holidays, sports, fall activities, etc. I find myself just wanting to have a weekend at home doing absolutely nothing! But, our family enjoys traditional outings, and we just have to make time for them. Believe me, once January hits we will be spending a lot of time at home.

Tell us about a place you went as a child or younger person that's no longer there or is now something else. How does that make you feel?

Rosie's Roller Rink. I went there every Sunday at 1:30 p.m. It closed down after a few years and then housed the town ambulance. I'm not sure what is there now. I wish it was still open so that my kids could go skate there. So many fun and dorky memories.

Describe your comfort zone.

I'm pretty comfortable everywhere, except in cliquish situations. I hate them, so I stay away from them.

Insert your own random thought here.

I love fall television! Some of my favorites right now are How to Get Away with Murder, Quantico, Criminal Minds, Law and Order: SVU, and Survivor. I will say that I have been having some wacky dreams lately, though. I wonder why.

  2. Ahh, the roller rink with all it's young teenage awkward nervous excitement. Are there roller rinks anymore? There are a few songs I hear on the radio that whisk me right back to the sweaty palm days of middle school and a boy asking me to skate.

  3. Oh how I would love to be able to roller skate every week as we used to. It was one of he highlights of each week. I'm going to have to look for a crockpot dressing recipe now.

We all know that in this crazy world of homeschooling, we need all the (adult) support we can get. Please leave a comment if you so wish!

ABCya

Eli's reading resource teacher shared a website with me yesterday that I would like to pass along. It's called ABCya . There are separate educational sections with fantastic games for ages kindergarten through 5th grade. I browsed the 2nd grade level, and it includes age-appropriate games about Letters, Numbers, Shapes, Geometry, Patterns, Mouse Manipulation, Art and Holiday games. There are lots and lots of fun and creative games for children to play. They are fun, but oh, so educational. Eli's favorite, in his short time playing it, was Create a Car . A lot of the games also have Apps available for purchase (99 cents for most of them) for the iPad and iPhone. I have been looking for another free website for games similar to Starfall , for some time. I think I have found it. I can feel confident having Eli and Brynne play these games.

Cells ~ It's What's for Dinner

Dawson made edible cells on Friday. He made an animal cell pizza ... and a plant cell chocolate chip cookie ... He reviewed what he's learned about cells the past two weeks, and I had dinner made by someone else. Win, win!! I am linking up at Science Sunday at Adventures in Mommydom.

Last Child in the Woods ~ Chapters 1-4

Welcome to our book study of Last Child in the Woods by Richard Louv. To be honest, I have no idea what this "study" is going to look like. I imagine that when we get together I will post about all of the things that caught my eye. And I would ask that you leave a comment, or a link to your own blog post in the comment, about what caught yours. This isn't anything formal, ladies, just a place to talk about what we have read. I have now read the first four chapters of Last Child in the Woods two times. It is just so good. Several things have specifically hit me deep, but in general I just realized that "times, they are a changin'." Things aren't the way they were when we were kids. Chapter 1. Gifts of Nature ~ "When I see birches bend to left and right ... I like to think some boy's been swinging them." ~ Robert Frost What is your definition of nature? What feelings, visions, senses does it conjure up? For me, it's not a
