Tuesday Coffee Chat

I'm not going to lie. I am sitting here drinking coffee trying to will myself to get up and get moving today when I would really rather climb back in bed for another hour. I didn't sleep very good last night, so I am feeling a little sluggish.

Drink another cup of coffee. That's what I'll do.

And answer today's Tuesday Coffee Chat prompt .... Do you have a personal theme song? Have you thought about picking one each year, much like how blogs choose One Word?

Leslie at Ink Interrupted (the host of Tuesday Coffee Chat) gave a link for picking your theme song. Mine said "Man-eater" by Hall and Oates. Um .... no, I don't think that's it. And then I did another random one and it said "Living on a Prayer" by Bon Jovi. I'm not sure that's it either.

I thought about my life and decided, at first, that it would be a song about contentment. I did a lyrics search and didn't come up with anything. But then I came upon a song by Pink and thought, yeah, Pink gets me fired up.

I love how many of her songs are just about being yourself!! It's okay to BE YOU!

I spent so many years of my life trying to be who others wanted me to be. And it led down many roads of discontentment and unhappiness. We are who we are. God created each of us to be unique IN OUR OWN WAYS! Our wants, needs, and desires were placed there by God. And He doesn't make mistakes!

I might go overboard on this with my own kids, in making sure they know it is OKAY to be who they are. I can give my advice to them, but they don't have to take it (well, there are some boundaries there if they are living under my roof, but you get the point). My kids do not have to please me in the ultimate way in which they choose to live their lives. They have to please their God and their spouse, if they have one.

There is not enough freedom to fail. We are so afraid of failure. But with a strong support system, failure is okay. Being stupid isn't. But, again, you get the point.

So when I hear "Raise your Glass" or "Perfect" (I prefer the cleaned-up version), I wanna sing and shout, and oftentimes I do when I am in the car alone.

I wanna say, "Yeah! That's what I'm talking about!!"

I am an introvert who likes to be at home. I have carved out a place of safety and contentment. I don't have a lot of needs other than security, some good books, coffee and tea, my family, and a few cute outfits (I love cute clothes). I don't need a big house with all the fanciest stuff, a new car every couple of years. I don't like to go out. I don't like to be around a lot of people. Going to a sporting event for my daughter pretty much does me in for the week. I prefer to spend money on experiences than things. I just want to snuggle up in the chair in my robe and slippers and read a book. I just want to take care of my family, making them my priority. This is who I am and it is more than okay.

So you BE YOU! It's okay. Raise your glass and celebrate it. You are perfect to me.

  2. Pink is such a great strong model for girls. Well, I guess for all of us: to just be who we are made to be. It's a freeing thing. And there certainly is nothing wrong with living a contented life that revolves around what.. or Who, is most important to us. Too many people out there chasing their darn tails.
The song I have actually had in my head most of my life, is an older one by Amy Grant - Father's Eyes. That's what I decided at a very young age would be my own goal.

  3. Ohhhhh yes!! Pink songs (especially the ones you mentioned) would be perfect theme songs! I think I need to fire a couple of those up in my headphones tomorrow morning when I'm imbibing in however many cups of coffee it'll take to face Monday and see if it has an affect on the entire week. ;)

We all know that in this crazy world of homeschooling, we need all the (adult) support we can get. Please leave a comment if you so wish!

ABCya

Eli's reading resource teacher shared a website with me yesterday that I would like to pass along. It's called ABCya . There are separate educational sections with fantastic games for ages kindergarten through 5th grade. I browsed the 2nd grade level, and it includes age-appropriate games about Letters, Numbers, Shapes, Geometry, Patterns, Mouse Manipulation, Art and Holiday games. There are lots and lots of fun and creative games for children to play. They are fun, but oh, so educational. Eli's favorite, in his short time playing it, was Create a Car . A lot of the games also have Apps available for purchase (99 cents for most of them) for the iPad and iPhone. I have been looking for another free website for games similar to Starfall , for some time. I think I have found it. I can feel confident having Eli and Brynne play these games.

Cells ~ It's What's for Dinner

Dawson made edible cells on Friday. He made an animal cell pizza ... and a plant cell chocolate chip cookie ... He reviewed what he's learned about cells the past two weeks, and I had dinner made by someone else. Win, win!! I am linking up at Science Sunday at Adventures in Mommydom.

Last Child in the Woods ~ Chapters 1-4

Welcome to our book study of Last Child in the Woods by Richard Louv. To be honest, I have no idea what this "study" is going to look like. I imagine that when we get together I will post about all of the things that caught my eye. And I would ask that you leave a comment, or a link to your own blog post in the comment, about what caught yours. This isn't anything formal, ladies, just a place to talk about what we have read. I have now read the first four chapters of Last Child in the Woods two times. It is just so good. Several things have specifically hit me deep, but in general I just realized that "times, they are a changin'." Things aren't the way they were when we were kids. Chapter 1. Gifts of Nature ~ "When I see birches bend to left and right ... I like to think some boy's been swinging them." ~ Robert Frost What is your definition of nature? What feelings, visions, senses does it conjure up? For me, it's not a
