Weekly Wrap-up ~ The Last Week of Christmas Break

In our regular life this week…

We continued with the LAZY trend until about Wednesday when I had finally had enough and needed to actually do something! I power cleaned the bathroom, dusted, and did a bunch of laundry. I also got a few things put back where they belong, although I know well enough that they won't stay there for long. It was also time to do some lesson planning because we start back to school on Monday. Can I get a boohoo???

We had record cold temps for a couple of days and then back up into the 30's. The kids had friends over to play in the snow on Tuesday, so that was fun!

Kyndal had a scary couple of moments when her car died in precarious locations because of the cold. We were worried it might be an actual car issue, but once the temps rose she didn't have any more problems.

Dawson was out of school on Monday and Tuesday because of the snow and cold temps. I have hibernated in the house since last Saturday, but he's been out and about every day. That's a teenager for you.

In our homeschool this week…

P.E. was the only subject this week with snow play with friends, Just Dance 2014, basketball practice and games, and bowling. Play time was school this week.

Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…

Nowhere and nobody. I haven't been in my car since last Saturday. The couple of times I needed items from the store, Dawson picked them up for me since he was already out and about.

A favorite thing this week was…

snuggling with my dogs. But, they are now spoiled and think that I need to be doing that with them every second of the day.

What's in the kitchen this week ...

More of everybody's favorite this week: chicken fettucine, lasagna and chicken stir fry. We have a refrigerator full of leftovers so we are working on those.

What we're reading ...

Mom:  The Distant Hours by Kate Morton. She has become one of my favorite authors. I get so absorbed in her books.

Eli: "Lego" Magazine.

Brynne: The Wimpy Kid Do-It-Yourself Book by Jeff Kinney.

Things we're working on…

I am working on grading papers for my class, lessons plans for the next month or so, and we are all enjoying these last few days of break before we launch into 60 more days of school until our next break.

I’m grateful for …

the opportunity to rest the past couple of weeks when I have become so weary. I can honestly say that I do not think I have needed a brain break this badly in years. Usually I am dying to get back into our schedule after a few days off. But not this time. I am actually kind of dreading it.

My progress on reading through the Bible in 2014 …

My plan to read through the Bible starts on the 15th, but I have been studying Galatians 5 and 1 Corinthians 13 in junction with my morning devotional of "Putting on the Spirit" by Katie Horner.

Money saved this week …

I had to dip into my savings jar (already) to get out a little extra money for groceries for the next week. But, that's okay. I still have $80 in there already.

I also added $1.79 to my change jar. I wasn't out purchasing anything this week, so my change all came from the couple of grocery purchases Dawson made for me and change I found laying around the house. If I find it, it's mine!

I exercised ...

not at all. Next week, friends, next week. I am still on vacay! And I need it! It's not only good for my body but also good for my soul.

What's coming up this week ...

Brynne has basketball practice on Friday night. Bowling league is Saturday morning. Rick and Dawson are going to get haircuts from Kyndal. Then Brynne has a basketball game on Saturday afternoon. The rest of the weekend we will be vegging to gear up for our back-to-school date and regular schedule on Monday.

We all know that in this crazy world of homeschooling, we need all the (adult) support we can get. Please leave a comment if you so wish!

ABCya

Eli's reading resource teacher shared a website with me yesterday that I would like to pass along. It's called ABCya . There are separate educational sections with fantastic games for ages kindergarten through 5th grade. I browsed the 2nd grade level, and it includes age-appropriate games about Letters, Numbers, Shapes, Geometry, Patterns, Mouse Manipulation, Art and Holiday games. There are lots and lots of fun and creative games for children to play. They are fun, but oh, so educational. Eli's favorite, in his short time playing it, was Create a Car . A lot of the games also have Apps available for purchase (99 cents for most of them) for the iPad and iPhone. I have been looking for another free website for games similar to Starfall , for some time. I think I have found it. I can feel confident having Eli and Brynne play these games.

Cells ~ It's What's for Dinner

Dawson made edible cells on Friday. He made an animal cell pizza ... and a plant cell chocolate chip cookie ... He reviewed what he's learned about cells the past two weeks, and I had dinner made by someone else. Win, win!! I am linking up at Science Sunday at Adventures in Mommydom.

Last Child in the Woods ~ Chapters 1-4

Welcome to our book study of Last Child in the Woods by Richard Louv. To be honest, I have no idea what this "study" is going to look like. I imagine that when we get together I will post about all of the things that caught my eye. And I would ask that you leave a comment, or a link to your own blog post in the comment, about what caught yours. This isn't anything formal, ladies, just a place to talk about what we have read. I have now read the first four chapters of Last Child in the Woods two times. It is just so good. Several things have specifically hit me deep, but in general I just realized that "times, they are a changin'." Things aren't the way they were when we were kids. Chapter 1. Gifts of Nature ~ "When I see birches bend to left and right ... I like to think some boy's been swinging them." ~ Robert Frost What is your definition of nature? What feelings, visions, senses does it conjure up? For me, it's not a
