Tuesday Coffee Chat

This week's topic for Tuesday Coffee Chat is RANDOM. That's it ...

Got a rant to get off your chest? A recent victory to share? Some cute kids to boast about? Your choice today.

Hmmmm ... How about if I share some of my favorite things.

If you know me at all you know that I am pretty frugal, or some might even like to call me cheap, especially when it comes to name brand products. I am just as happy having generic versions. I cannot stand paying full price for something, especially something that has a high price tag. But over the past couple of years I have found that there are just some items that are worth the extra money. At the top of my list are The North Face jackets/coats (lightweight, very warm, versatile, some are water proof and wind resistant) (and don't tell my husband but the one he bought me for Valentine's Day is on sale at Backcountry for $95.97 with free shipping right now) (he can order me the highrise grey one for Christmas, if he wants to!), Ugg boots (I have three pair and two more I want for Christmas this year. You can't beat them for warmth and comfort.), a good pair of jeans (my favorites are Miss Me and Big Star, although I still purchase those on eBay or at garage sales if I can find them in my size) (and I do prefer to keep the bling on the butt to a minimum). Sometimes I wear all three of these things at the same time. I ask for these things for holidays because they are bigger ticket items.

I have gotten so tired of replacing my expensive Chi flat irons! The original ones seemed to last forever, unless you drop and shatter them. Oops. But the new ones burn out quickly and they are way too expensive to continue to replace. When all of my flat irons quit working, I borrowed Kyndal's salon flat iron which is a Hot Tools. Loved it! So I found one at JC Penney for $39.99. It is awesome! The temperature is perfect and it makes my hair look so shiny.

Essential oils are a must in our house now. We use my homemade Thieves for any illness we feel we are getting. In fact I just put it on Dawson last night because he was feeling cruddy and he was feeling better within a couple of hours. We are running it in our vaporizer and humidifier every day. It smells great and we are feeling good after using it!

I took a chance and started putting lemon oil in my water and chamomile tea to help my heartburn and indigestion. I am hoping and praying that it will allow me to replace my prescription Prilosec. Even if it doesn't, I will continue to use it because it just tastes so good!

Have you ever eaten the Brew Pub Pretzels and Beer Cheese Dip at Applebee's? Oh my gosh, it is the most delicious thing I have ever eaten. I mean the most delicious thing. Try them!

I have been reading a lot lately and my favorite read of the year so far is Still Alice by Lisa Genova. It was so, so good. I highly recommend it!

Um, I guess that's about it for now. I am not one to get too worked up with "must haves", but these are things I have realized over the past year or so that are at the top of my list.

And that's Random.

  3. Thanks for the great list of your "favorite things", Nicole! I, too, love NorthFace jackets...Columbia ones are good, too! I've never owned any UGGS before, but maybe I need to hop on the bandwagon. I've been dying to try some essential oils. Where do you find yours?

    1. We live in a tiny town with a large Amish population so I purchase NOW oils from the Amish store. I haven't tried any other brands, but NOW has worked well for us. I just research online as to which ones to use for what ailments.

  4. Oh I covet both the North Face Jackets and the Ugg boots!! My friend just got one of their jacket and it's so nice.. and so thin, but warm!! she loves it.
I always put lemon and honey in my tea --- sometimes just in hot water. it always seems to help digestion after a meal. It's good first thing in the morning too.
I don't think we have Applebee's in Canada??
I like this idea of Favourite Things! I may have to use that in a future chat topic.

  5. Have you tried Peppermint for heartburn? It stops a gluten stomach ache in its tracks. Peppermint can burn skin so I use Vitamin E oil as a carrier. Do you have a good reference book for essential oils? I am on the lookout for one. Thanks!

    1. I just do all my essential oil research online. So far I have only tried a few things. Thank you for the recommendation for peppermint oil for heartburn. The lemon oil is working amazing well right now, but I have peppermint in my nightstand basket for headaches, so I will keep that in mind!

  7. I have generic Uggs, but always debate buying a real pair. I wear mine all the time on winter mornings.
My mom is into oils. She's a certified herbalist, so she's always making interesting concoctions! She made us handsoap with Thieves in it!
I must have those pretzels. Yum!

ABCya

Eli's reading resource teacher shared a website with me yesterday that I would like to pass along. It's called ABCya . There are separate educational sections with fantastic games for ages kindergarten through 5th grade. I browsed the 2nd grade level, and it includes age-appropriate games about Letters, Numbers, Shapes, Geometry, Patterns, Mouse Manipulation, Art and Holiday games. There are lots and lots of fun and creative games for children to play. They are fun, but oh, so educational. Eli's favorite, in his short time playing it, was Create a Car . A lot of the games also have Apps available for purchase (99 cents for most of them) for the iPad and iPhone. I have been looking for another free website for games similar to Starfall , for some time. I think I have found it. I can feel confident having Eli and Brynne play these games.

Cells ~ It's What's for Dinner

Dawson made edible cells on Friday. He made an animal cell pizza ... and a plant cell chocolate chip cookie ... He reviewed what he's learned about cells the past two weeks, and I had dinner made by someone else. Win, win!! I am linking up at Science Sunday at Adventures in Mommydom.

Last Child in the Woods ~ Chapters 1-4

Welcome to our book study of Last Child in the Woods by Richard Louv. To be honest, I have no idea what this "study" is going to look like. I imagine that when we get together I will post about all of the things that caught my eye. And I would ask that you leave a comment, or a link to your own blog post in the comment, about what caught yours. This isn't anything formal, ladies, just a place to talk about what we have read. I have now read the first four chapters of Last Child in the Woods two times. It is just so good. Several things have specifically hit me deep, but in general I just realized that "times, they are a changin'." Things aren't the way they were when we were kids. Chapter 1. Gifts of Nature ~ "When I see birches bend to left and right ... I like to think some boy's been swinging them." ~ Robert Frost What is your definition of nature? What feelings, visions, senses does it conjure up? For me, it's not a
