Wednesday Hodgepodge

In like a lion, out like a lamb .... does the first part of this saying describing March weather ring true where you live?

It certainly could and I certainly hope it does. We had a beautiful first day of March, but it was very snowy and cold. I hope that we have the opposite of that on March 31st ... sunny and warm.

March 4th is National Grammar Day. What common grammatical error bothers you the most?

Your versus you're, and 99% of what teenagers think is proper grammar these days. I had an amazing English/grammar teacher in high school and she is rolling over in her grave with the improper use of grammar by current high school students.

William Arthur Ward says, "The pessimist complains about the wind; the optimist expects it to change; the realist adjusts the sails." Which one are you?

I have always thought of myself as a realist. I might complain for a moment but then pull myself together and start making the adjustments. But when it comes to literal wind,  I am a pessimist. When the wind is whipping I just say, "Ughhhh!!!" and try to get away from it. With all the hurls from the arrows of the Devil lately, I find myself complaining instead of adjusting or having an expectation of God to change it.

What's something you need to 'march forth and conquer' this month?

Staying on a strict budget. With moving Kyndal's wedding up almost two months and paying for a destination wedding, we have had to come up with funds more quickly and in a bigger chunk than we were planning. To do that is requiring some belt tightening for the next few months. No extras!

An ongoing debate around here ... do you dust first then vacuum or vacuum first then dust? Of the two routine household chores which do you dislike the least? How's that for wording?

In my perfect world I don't vacuum or dust on the same day. Instead I do one major housecleaning chore each day of the week. However, I absolutely HATE to dust. That's why all of my surfaces are dusty right now. Vacuuming is not a whole lot of fun, either, but I have to do it several times a week because of all of the dog hair. I usually vacuum on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and then 'as needed'. I am supposed to dust every Wednesday, but I always tend to talk myself out of it until 'next week'.

According to thrillist.com the ten most photographed sites in the U.S.A. are: Cinderella's Castle in Orlando, Southernmost House in Key West, The Space Needle in Seattle, The Site of the Boston Massacre in Boston, The Bellagio lake/fountains in Las Vegas, The Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C., Coit Tower in San Francisco, The Art Institute of Chicago, Niagara Falls, and snagging the number one spot ... The Guggenheim Museum in New York City. How many on this list have you photographed? Which on the list would you most like to visit and photograph?

I have photographed the Southernmost Point in Key West, but not the house (didn't know there was a designated house). And I have photographed at The Bellagio. Otherwise, that's it. I think I would like to get an iconic pic of my family at Niagara Falls with the water and mist pouring down over our ponchos.

Fifty years ago Monday (March 2, 1965) The Sound of Music premiered at the Rivoli Theatre in NYC. Have you seen the film? Do you own a copy? One a scale of 1-10 how much do you love it (or not)? If you're a fan, what's your favorite scene or song from the movie?

LOVE this movie! I would give it a strong 9. It is actually one of my all-time favorites. I don't own the movie, but I have seen it multiple times and even seen it in a musical a couple of times. My favorite scene is when the nuns are walking Maria through the abbey to the cathedral for the wedding, leaving her at the gate with her future daughters and then the chorus of the nuns singing "How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?" It gives me chills.

Insert your own random thought here.

I have now ordered my daughter's wedding invitations and my son's graduation announcements. Both events will happen within one week of each other in May. Whoa.

  1. Oh wow-May will be exciting for your family : ) My daughter just got married in January, and I do believe these things always cost more than we anticipate. We came in really close to our budget, but there were a few things I didn't think to include. I have another daughter to plan for one day, so I've saved my notes.

ABCya

Eli's reading resource teacher shared a website with me yesterday that I would like to pass along. It's called ABCya . There are separate educational sections with fantastic games for ages kindergarten through 5th grade. I browsed the 2nd grade level, and it includes age-appropriate games about Letters, Numbers, Shapes, Geometry, Patterns, Mouse Manipulation, Art and Holiday games. There are lots and lots of fun and creative games for children to play. They are fun, but oh, so educational. Eli's favorite, in his short time playing it, was Create a Car . A lot of the games also have Apps available for purchase (99 cents for most of them) for the iPad and iPhone. I have been looking for another free website for games similar to Starfall , for some time. I think I have found it. I can feel confident having Eli and Brynne play these games.

Cells ~ It's What's for Dinner

Dawson made edible cells on Friday. He made an animal cell pizza ... and a plant cell chocolate chip cookie ... He reviewed what he's learned about cells the past two weeks, and I had dinner made by someone else. Win, win!! I am linking up at Science Sunday at Adventures in Mommydom.

Last Child in the Woods ~ Chapters 1-4

Welcome to our book study of Last Child in the Woods by Richard Louv. To be honest, I have no idea what this "study" is going to look like. I imagine that when we get together I will post about all of the things that caught my eye. And I would ask that you leave a comment, or a link to your own blog post in the comment, about what caught yours. This isn't anything formal, ladies, just a place to talk about what we have read. I have now read the first four chapters of Last Child in the Woods two times. It is just so good. Several things have specifically hit me deep, but in general I just realized that "times, they are a changin'." Things aren't the way they were when we were kids. Chapter 1. Gifts of Nature ~ "When I see birches bend to left and right ... I like to think some boy's been swinging them." ~ Robert Frost What is your definition of nature? What feelings, visions, senses does it conjure up? For me, it's not a
