Weekly Wrap-Up ~ Yes, UP!

** If you are visiting here from Weird, Unsocialized Homeschoolers, you might have noticed that I misspelled my own blog name. I really do know how to spell "excellence."

This week we got back to our reading schedule. Well, for a couple of days anyway. We had been off for a couple of weeks with travel and other activities and so Monday was a bear of a day! On Tuesday, though, we seemed to have our groove back. Things were definitely looking up!

Tuesday we took a quick trip to the water park. It was almost too hot to go, so we made sure we got there right when it opened and only spent two hours in the blazing heat! Although the kids did hit all the slides, they spent the majority of their time scaling the rock wall. They tried their hardest to get up to the top!

On Wednesday we had our Homeschool Co-op Playgroup. I love, love, love these times together! We actually had some time that day to be able to talk about the book we have been reading, Seasons of a Mother's Heart by Sally Clarkson. I feel like we are learning so much, not only from the book, but from each other! The real upside is that through these get-togethers I have made some amazing friends!

Each time we get together we do some kind of craft. It always seems that the moms get into it more than the girls! We just can't help ourselves! This week the kids made capes out of men's t-shirts. What a great craft and how much fun! My kids are always tying blankets around their necks as capes and often play super heroes. Now they have their own personalized capes and I will be hearing lots of, "up, up and away!"

On Thursday and Friday, Eli and Brynne participated in a Mad Science two-day camp. On Thursday they got to experience chemistry with the upward projectory of a baking soda and vinegar volcano. And then on Friday they watched as their rockets propelled up, up, and further up into the sky! Additionally they learned other aspects of chemistry and secret messages. And they made crystals, slime, rock candy and rubber band propelled spaceships.

It was another fun and educational summer week! Next week I hope to get to our Sunflower study. We are having some friends over on Wednesday, so I might pick up some pastels and put the kids to work sketching.

See what other summer fun is going on at Weird, Unsocialized Homeschoolers. Some families are back to full-time school! We have one month left of summer break. Soaking in every minute.

  1. We're hoping to get to the waterpark at least once this summer. (We have 2 free passes, so at least some of us are covered.) It's ALWAYS so crowded though!

LOVE the capes! What a GREAT idea! I'll have to look through DHs old t-shirts and re-purpose them! LOL My youngest would have a blast making it!

And yes, I'm worried about those Robin fledglings, but they're gone. We couldn't find them in the woods and the parents are gone as well so maybe they're off somewhere else. I hope.

  2. You've definitely had a lot up at your house this week. ;-) The water/rock climbing wall looks like fun. My kids would love that.

And, if it makes you feel any better, I've misspelled my blog name before, too. ;-) Sometimes that whole "i-before-e" thing trips me up.

  3. Wow! That science day camp looks like so much fun. My boys would love the rocket part.

I love those capes! Such a great project! It's nice that you have a supportive group of fellow homeschoolers that you can meet with.

ABCya

Eli's reading resource teacher shared a website with me yesterday that I would like to pass along. It's called ABCya . There are separate educational sections with fantastic games for ages kindergarten through 5th grade. I browsed the 2nd grade level, and it includes age-appropriate games about Letters, Numbers, Shapes, Geometry, Patterns, Mouse Manipulation, Art and Holiday games. There are lots and lots of fun and creative games for children to play. They are fun, but oh, so educational. Eli's favorite, in his short time playing it, was Create a Car . A lot of the games also have Apps available for purchase (99 cents for most of them) for the iPad and iPhone. I have been looking for another free website for games similar to Starfall , for some time. I think I have found it. I can feel confident having Eli and Brynne play these games.

Cells ~ It's What's for Dinner

Dawson made edible cells on Friday. He made an animal cell pizza ... and a plant cell chocolate chip cookie ... He reviewed what he's learned about cells the past two weeks, and I had dinner made by someone else. Win, win!! I am linking up at Science Sunday at Adventures in Mommydom.

Last Child in the Woods ~ Chapters 1-4

Welcome to our book study of Last Child in the Woods by Richard Louv. To be honest, I have no idea what this "study" is going to look like. I imagine that when we get together I will post about all of the things that caught my eye. And I would ask that you leave a comment, or a link to your own blog post in the comment, about what caught yours. This isn't anything formal, ladies, just a place to talk about what we have read. I have now read the first four chapters of Last Child in the Woods two times. It is just so good. Several things have specifically hit me deep, but in general I just realized that "times, they are a changin'." Things aren't the way they were when we were kids. Chapter 1. Gifts of Nature ~ "When I see birches bend to left and right ... I like to think some boy's been swinging them." ~ Robert Frost What is your definition of nature? What feelings, visions, senses does it conjure up? For me, it's not a
