Wednesday Hodgepodge

From This Side of the Pond had these questions to ponder this week on Wednesday Hodgepodge:

I'm celebrating a birthday this week so a question relating to aging feels appropriate. Douglas MacArthur is quoted as saying, "You are as young as your faith, as old as your doubt; as young as your self-confidence, as old as your fear; as young as your hope, as old as your despair." Would you agree? If not, why not?

Doubt, fear and despair weigh you down. Those emotions suck so much energy and make you feel so tired and old! Faith, self-confidence, and hope lift you up and make you feel light and young, like you can conquer anything.

What remarkable feat, interesting piece of trivia, or historical event, occurred on your birth day and month? Not necessarily in your birth year, just the same date/same month.

It was a musical day on August 1, 1960 .... Aretha Franklin had her first recording session and Chubby Checker released "The Twist". (But let's be clear ... I was not born in 1960! In fact, my mother was only 9 years old on that date!)

Describe a time or circumstance where you wanted to 'have your cake and eat it too'.

After law school I was working full time, married, and trying to be a mother to Kyndal and Dawson. I wanted the professional life and the family life. The problem was I just couldn't pull it off. I was miserable. I was miserable in my professional life and miserable in my marriage. I wanted to be home with my kids full time but have the financial security of working full time. And it was my income that gave us a secure lifestyle. I was stuck. There might be women who can do it all, but I was not one of those women.

What's something you do to make you feel young? Something that makes you feel old?

Being a mom does both to me. And it varies from day to day, sometimes from minute to minute. They keep me moving and shaking and feeling like I need to take a nap, all at the same time.

When did you last do something that was a 'piece of cake'?

Is anything a piece of cake these days? I will say that ever since we moved to Missouri and began small town living things sure seem easier. There aren't a lot of life's complications. Day-to-day living is just a piece of cake.

Beef, wine, and cheese all improve with age. What's something else you'd add to that list? (not necessarily food or beverage)

A good pair of shoes. You know the ones ... we all have them. They are the shoes that you cherish and take care of and that have been worn in perfectly and fit like a glove. They are the ones that you just feel at home in when your feet slip into them. They are the ones you plan whole outfits around.

If I were to have a giveaway when we hit Volume 200, what should I give away? By my calculations we'll hit Volume 200 on November 26th, the day before Thanksgiving, which means whoever wins would have whatever it is in time for Christmas.

How about a $200 Amazon gift card? (not asking for too much, huh?) I already have Christmas gifts sitting in my cart!

Insert your own random thought here.

I am back to binge watching Revenge on Netflix. Kyndal and I started it last winter during some snow days and I haven't watched any more since then. I am on Episode 15 of Season 2. I officially have to watch 30 more episodes before Season 4's premiere on September 26th. You will know where to find me over the next two weeks.

  2. Several people have mentioned Amazon, so that might be part of the giveaway. I haven't seen Revenge. We're currently watching Homeland and like it a lot. I can only handle one program addiction at a time : )

ABCya

Eli's reading resource teacher shared a website with me yesterday that I would like to pass along. It's called ABCya . There are separate educational sections with fantastic games for ages kindergarten through 5th grade. I browsed the 2nd grade level, and it includes age-appropriate games about Letters, Numbers, Shapes, Geometry, Patterns, Mouse Manipulation, Art and Holiday games. There are lots and lots of fun and creative games for children to play. They are fun, but oh, so educational. Eli's favorite, in his short time playing it, was Create a Car . A lot of the games also have Apps available for purchase (99 cents for most of them) for the iPad and iPhone. I have been looking for another free website for games similar to Starfall , for some time. I think I have found it. I can feel confident having Eli and Brynne play these games.

Cells ~ It's What's for Dinner

Dawson made edible cells on Friday. He made an animal cell pizza ... and a plant cell chocolate chip cookie ... He reviewed what he's learned about cells the past two weeks, and I had dinner made by someone else. Win, win!! I am linking up at Science Sunday at Adventures in Mommydom.

Last Child in the Woods ~ Chapters 1-4

Welcome to our book study of Last Child in the Woods by Richard Louv. To be honest, I have no idea what this "study" is going to look like. I imagine that when we get together I will post about all of the things that caught my eye. And I would ask that you leave a comment, or a link to your own blog post in the comment, about what caught yours. This isn't anything formal, ladies, just a place to talk about what we have read. I have now read the first four chapters of Last Child in the Woods two times. It is just so good. Several things have specifically hit me deep, but in general I just realized that "times, they are a changin'." Things aren't the way they were when we were kids. Chapter 1. Gifts of Nature ~ "When I see birches bend to left and right ... I like to think some boy's been swinging them." ~ Robert Frost What is your definition of nature? What feelings, visions, senses does it conjure up? For me, it's not a
