The Simple Woman's Daybook

Let's do a Daybook entry today. Why not?

For today ... Wednesday, May 7, 2015

Outside my window ... it's another beautiful day! It's going to be 80 degrees and is partly cloudy with a nice breezy wind. There are chances of rain, but even that would be nice to see out the window.

I am thinking ... about switching out all of my winter and summer clothes this afternoon. I am planning to get rid of a lot of things and keep my wardrobe simple this summer. (More on that in a minute.)

I am thankful ... for victory after patience and perseverance. So thankful!

I am wearing ... a black workout tank with a green Avia workout top, gray workout capris, tennis shoes, and my Fitbit.

I am creating ... a streamlined home. My mom came over this week and helped me purge, organize and clean our main living areas. I love my simplified kitchen, dining room and living room!! It makes me feel so much more at peace! Now I need to do the same thing to the basement. Ugh!

I am going ... to really concentrate on my diet and exercise program for the next two weeks before we go on our vacation. Hard work has definitely paid off, and I want to see what more I can accomplish.

I am wondering ... if Dawson and his friends are having a good time at Worlds of Fun today on their Senior Skip Day.

I am reading ... Serena by Ron Rash. Yes, I am now reading it with a goal to be finished by next Friday. I have a total of three books I want read by the end of the month. I want to get back into a habit of reading and have started a reading list. It should be easier to make reading a priority now that most of our television shows will be on summer hiatus.

I am hoping ... Eli and Brynne are successful at their state bowling tournament this weekend. Last year their team won first in state and Eli placed 4th in singles. They feel a lot of pressure to defend their title. I hope they just have fun!

I am learning ... about the best way to plant and take care of sweet potatoes. I am addicted to sweet potatoes so would love to have my own harvest!!

In my garden ... are 12 new strawberry plants. I picked them up at the Amish greenhouse yesterday. Hoping for some berries!!

In my kitchen ... are less dust-collectors. Those artificial sprays and things on the shelves look nice, but get nasty, nasty! And for someone like me who doesn't like to clean house, they just had to go! (Thanks for talking me into it, mom!)

In the homeschool room ... no school going on this month, but we are taking school outside the schoolroom tomorrow and going to tour the Missouri capitol building.

A favorite quote for today ...

A peek into one of my days ...

One of my favorite things ... is watching Brynne play sports. She's fun to watch because she plays really hard but doesn't take herself too seriously. She is an awesome team player and loves being with her friends! Plus, she is just so darned cute!

From the board room ... How to Grow and Care for Sweet Potatoes from Dan Ashbach (my go-to gardening guru).

Post Script ... Ashton at Family, Faith & Fridays has inspired me to create a capsule wardrobe for Summer. With very limited closet space in our 100 year old home, I would like my hanging clothes to be limited to 30 pieces for summer. I would like to end up with 2 pair of jeans, 2 pair of capris, 2 pair of pants, and 9 pair of shorts. This will not include any of my everyday workout clothes, pool clothes,  undershirts, socks, underwear, shoes or accessories (although I am going to pare those down to only the ones I love, that fit, that are in great shape). That will have my summer capsule at 45 items. Wish me luck as I begin the purge this afternoon! No more "but I might wear that someday" attitude.

  1. Nicole! We were super excited to read about you working on a capsule wardrobe! Can't wait to hear how it works for you! If you decide to blog about it let us know, we would love to share your experience! The next three Mondays on the blog will be more about that very subject!

  2. After seeing you post the Daybook last week, I decided to give it a swirl. I like having prompts to focus my blogging, and wanted something focused on ME and MY life as mostly it's about the kids, the animals and homeschooling. I'm working on a streamlined house too! I find clutter distracting! And who needs all that stuff just lying around or filling up closets? For clothes? I'm definitely a minimalist! LOL I do laundry as soon as I have a load...

  3. I watched the moving Serena. They totally screwed it up. It doesn't even end as the book does. Ugh. Stick with the book. It's much better. (Just my two cents ;0) )

We all know that in this crazy world of homeschooling, we need all the (adult) support we can get. Please leave a comment if you so wish!

ABCya

Eli's reading resource teacher shared a website with me yesterday that I would like to pass along. It's called ABCya . There are separate educational sections with fantastic games for ages kindergarten through 5th grade. I browsed the 2nd grade level, and it includes age-appropriate games about Letters, Numbers, Shapes, Geometry, Patterns, Mouse Manipulation, Art and Holiday games. There are lots and lots of fun and creative games for children to play. They are fun, but oh, so educational. Eli's favorite, in his short time playing it, was Create a Car . A lot of the games also have Apps available for purchase (99 cents for most of them) for the iPad and iPhone. I have been looking for another free website for games similar to Starfall , for some time. I think I have found it. I can feel confident having Eli and Brynne play these games.

Cells ~ It's What's for Dinner

Dawson made edible cells on Friday. He made an animal cell pizza ... and a plant cell chocolate chip cookie ... He reviewed what he's learned about cells the past two weeks, and I had dinner made by someone else. Win, win!! I am linking up at Science Sunday at Adventures in Mommydom.

Last Child in the Woods ~ Chapters 1-4

Welcome to our book study of Last Child in the Woods by Richard Louv. To be honest, I have no idea what this "study" is going to look like. I imagine that when we get together I will post about all of the things that caught my eye. And I would ask that you leave a comment, or a link to your own blog post in the comment, about what caught yours. This isn't anything formal, ladies, just a place to talk about what we have read. I have now read the first four chapters of Last Child in the Woods two times. It is just so good. Several things have specifically hit me deep, but in general I just realized that "times, they are a changin'." Things aren't the way they were when we were kids. Chapter 1. Gifts of Nature ~ "When I see birches bend to left and right ... I like to think some boy's been swinging them." ~ Robert Frost What is your definition of nature? What feelings, visions, senses does it conjure up? For me, it's not a
