Tuesday Coffee Chat

Your nickname ... Growing up it was Nikki. When I went to college I ditched it to be more sophisticated with my given name, Nicole. That worked well until we moved back to my childhood hometown three years ago. Guess who I am again? Yep ... Nikki. And there is no fighting it.

Your eye color ... Blue.

Your hair color ... Well, that one's a little tougher. I am a natural dishwater blonde. With a little help, I am a highlighted, sun-kissed blonde.

One fact about you ... Today is my anniversary! Rick and I have been married for 14 years. It's been a great ride and I am excited to see where our journey takes us next.

Favorite color ... Green, mostly lime green. It's my "signature color". Anytime I can buy something in a particular color, I go for lime green. Look ... Rick was even wearing my favorite color in the above photo.

Favorite place ... My house. I could stay here and not leave it ever.

Favorite celebrity ... I have a Top 5: Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Shemar Moore, Mark Wahlberg, any bald guy. I always tell people that if they wanted to spend a ridiculous amount of money on me that I would like to spend an entire day with Tim Gunn. In the movie about my life I want Diane Lane to play me and Vin Diesel to play Rick.

Favorite animal ... I love birds. I just want to sit and watch them all day.

Favorite song ... Favorite songs change constantly, don't they? I have favorite 80's hair band songs, favorite disco-vibe songs (Abba), favorite mushy love songs, favorite contemporary Christian songs, favorite country songs, etc. Right now I am loving the song Take Your Time by Sam Hunt. I am constantly singing it.

Favorite book ... It's hard to pick a favorite, but how about Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers. In the past few years I have really loved The Kitchen House by Kathleen Grissom and The Aviator's Wife by Melanie Benjamin. My favorite author is Kristin Hannah. My childhood favorite book was A Room for Cathy by Catherine Woolley. It was my favorite because I always wanted my own bedroom (I shared with my sister) and Cathy finally got hers. I have an old paperback of it on my bookshelf.

  1. Happy Anniversary! I hope you two have a great day!
    Also? Shemar Moore. YEP.

  2. oh I like that song! so pretty, but his lyrical style is very unique too. love it!
and Happy Anniversary!! I hope you have a lovely time today celebrating.
but that porch looks very inviting and comfy; I might not leave home either.

Shemar Moore. his instagram is a gift. A GIFT!! :)

  3. Happy anniversary!! We are on year 33 or something ridiculous and I can honestly say it only gets better. :) I think we have a lot in common- I could stay in my little cocoon (my house) and never leave and be totally content. I also love to sit on the porch and watch the bird’s come and go.

  4. Happy anniversary! I'm kinda fond of my house too! There are times when I long for winter and snow so I can stay home without running here and my PJs with crocheting and a book...and the computer.

  5. Ahh, you're a homeschool mom. Me, too. Well, I'm a veteran homeschool all graduated and out of the house. Those were hard, but good times. Take Your Time is a new favorite of mine, but I love music and it's just hard to say what's my favorite from day-to-day. It was good meeting you from Les' Tuesday Coffee Chat. I'm making my rounds a bit late this week, but I hope you'll stop by to read...10 get-to-know Cathy facts #A2ZRoadTrip #music when you can. Have an awesome day!

America: The Story of Us ~ Episode 1: "Rebels" Lesson Plans

Here it is ... the first installment of our American History lesson plans using "America: The Story of Us" as our spine. We are currently on Episode 6 and I anticipate us at least getting through Episode 10 by the end of the school year. I hope that you find these posts helpful as you plan your lessons.

The first episode of America: The Story of Us is "Rebels". We spent three weeks on this unit.

We started reading Blood on the River by Elisa Lynn Carbone. We read an equal number of pages each day to cover the three-week unit (** highly recommend).

We watched Episode 1, did the discussion questions/video quiz for the episode and the vocabulary words. These can be printed by going here. The Episode Guides are down the left hand column on the site.

All "notebooking pages" are printed from Advanced World HistoryVol. 2 from Hold that Thought!

All "America's Heritage" references are materials printed from America's Heritage: An Adventure in Lib…

Cells ~ It's What's for Dinner

Dawson made edible cells on Friday.

He made an animal cell pizza ...

and a plant cell chocolate chip cookie ...

He reviewed what he's learned about cells the past two weeks, and I had dinner made by someone else. Win, win!!

I am linking up at Science Sunday at Adventures in Mommydom.

Ketogenic + Restless Legs = Insomnia ... Um, No!

Okay, I have been eating ketogenic for five days now. I have gotten through the carb detox headaches and have settled into a macro plan of 5% carbs (no grains), 20% protein, 75% fat.

The upside is that I like the idea of limiting my body of all of the glucose which will help my minor health conditions.

But there are definitely downsides!

The first is that I am having a hard time getting in enough fats under the strictures of the diet. Who knew it would be hard to eat fats? The real problem is that the fats I want to eat then include a consumption of protein and/or carbs and then throws off my percentages. Still working on that one.

The bigger issue is that for the past couple of nights I have had trouble sleeping, and I have had restless legs.

Sleeping is one of those things that I do well. I go to bed at the same time every night (for the most part) and get up at the same time each morning. I can fit in a 15-30 minute power nap in the afternoon and have no trouble going to sleep at n…
